Why haven't I heard about this previously?

Due to the serious and delicate nature of this incident we have needed to act judiciously, which includes how we communicate. We first explained what happened in some detail in our winter QR, and again briefly in our spring QR. Our Vesak celebration is the first major event we have held since our lives were put at risk, and it is our responsibility to ensure that anyone who may choose to attend is appropriately informed.

You seem paranoid. Is this attack really as bad as you’re saying it is? It was just slashed tires.

Yes, we hope you're right. We felt the same way a few years ago, when the aggressive and false online attacks started. But we have come to face the fact that holding this attitude has encouraged the increasingly aggressive and false attacks of the past few years that have escalated to the point of attempting to cause us bodily harm or death.

When we learned that the tactic used to slash the tires was one that was specifically designed to cause an accident it shook us out of our fear-based complacency. We needed to sit down as a community and reassess, and take responsibility for avoiding the discomfort that comes with realizing that there are those who wish to cause us harm. We have chosen to take this seriously, in order to be safe.

In fact, in this way we are helping those who, due to their own inability to face discomfort, are endangering us. We hope to stop them from accelerating toward disaster.

Furthermore, we have noted that the large majority of those who suggest we are paranoid come from privileged backgrounds. On the other hand, the large majority of those who encourage us to take this attack seriously and ask for help come from marginalized groups. We must accept that as long as we offer an alternative to the status quo, we may face attacks.
